Patina Solutions
Liver of Sulfur patina from Sculpt Nouveau
Liver of Sulfur patina from Sculpt Nouveau
Liver of Sulfur is the classic darkening patina for bronze, brass, and copper.

Depending on the surface, the strength of the solution, and the application method, it will produce a golden brown to a burgundy black patina. It is most commonly used as a base patina to increase contrast between light and dark areas.

Liver of Sulfur may be used hot or cold and must be water rinsed to stop the reaction. To create the patina, combine 1 tsp. with 1 pint of distilled water. The solution will deteriorate rapidly so it is recommended to only mix enough for a day or so. Unused chunks should be sealed and stored in a cool, dry, and dark location.

Water Base Dye Oxide Patina Colors
The Dye Oxide patinas do not contain acids; they are UV safe, indoor, or outdoor oxides. These patinas may be applied hot or cold to any metal including iron, steel, and aluminum without causing rust. They are best applied hot; they do not react with the metal. The color of these patinas will remain the same; they will not change as with an acid patina. The metal surface needs to be clean before application. The Dye Oxide patinas are more transparent than the Universal patinas.

Smart Stain
Smart Stain is a strong, non-hazardous, fast drying, transparent patina system. It has no VOC and no odor. Smart Stain works on any metal or substrate as well as over patinas and other oxides.

Smart Stain is made by combining finely ground, naturally occurring colored oxides with a water base polymer/resin binder. It is sold concentrated and may be diluted with distilled water up to 25% to increase transparency. Only Smart Coat 1K should be used to dilute any further.

For exterior applications, Smart Stain should be sealed with three layers of Smart Coat 1K (with a one hour drying time between each layer).

Smart Stain contains UV inhibitors and will not fade outdoors if maintained properly. Maintenance requirements will vary by location. In most environments, regular application of a wax or oil is sufficient to maintain this finish.

Patina Stain from Sculpt Nouveau
Patina Stains are blended to match chemical or traditional patinas, but are easier to apply and manage. Because the Patina Stains include a blend of our Solvent Dyes and Permalac sealer, they are UV stable.

These stains may be sprayed, brushed, or rubbed on any metal. They may be thinned to produce a lighter shade. One gallon of Patina Stain covers approximately 300 sq/ft. For best results, over-spray with Permalac after application.

The stains are available in Verde (copper green), Black (looks like gun bluing or PC9), and Brown (oil rubbed bronze), and yellow. They are also available in normal and environmentally friendly formulas. The environmentally friendly formula has lower VOC, no solvent odor, and may be thinned with Permalac EF or acetone.

Traditional Black Patinas from Sculpt Nouveau
Slate Black Patina is a versatile and unique finish for use on iron, steel, stainless steel, aluminum, bronze, brass, or copper.

Applied hot, Slate Black will create a deep brown patina on aluminum and a red-green finish on stainless steel. On iron, steel, and nonferrous metals, Slate Black will form a black patina when applied cold.

Before applying this patina, sandblasting or sanding is required to clean the surface of oil, oxides, and residues. Slate Black may be applied as a spray or in an immersion process. Depending on the application method chosen, the results will range from a uniform solid color to a layered textured appearance. Slate Black Patina may be diluted up to 50% with distilled water depending on the desired strength of finish. The finish may be burnished wet or dry. Additional patinas can be layered over a Slate Black base. When dry, protect the finish with multiple coats of a clear sealer.

In his ongoing series of free video lessons, Ron Young demonstrates the Slate Black Patina application process on bronze cold cast resin.

Black Magic Patina instantly creates a beautiful rich black patina on clean iron & steel. Rust will not occur immediately as with other darkening patinas. Water rinsing is a good neutralizer and will not cause rust. Rust will occur after 12 hours if a clear sealer is not applied.

Black Magic will darken bonded bronze, brass, and copper castings as well as Sculpt Nouveau's Metal Coatings to an orange-black color.

Black Magic creates a beautiful brown-black patina on cleaned bronze, brass, and copper.

Stainless Black Patina is made to create a black patina finish on stainless steel.

Vista Series Patina Solutions
Vista patinas are a two part patina combined in one solution. The base patina is a blend of chemicals that produce a beautiful green on bronze, brass, and copper, or an exquisite rust on iron & steel. Added to this base solution are different colored oxides which will blend with the first reaction to form a marbled patina. For example, using the vista black on bronze would produce a green and black patina and a rust and black patina on iron.

Black Magic Patina
Black Magic Patina creates a beautiful, rich black patina on iron and steel. It takes only 3-5 minutes to develop and does not produce the quick rust that you normally see with other blackening agents. The first coat will be dark grey, but the finish will become black after a few coats. Rust will develop if a clear sealer is not applied to the completed finish.

Black Magic Patina works similarly on bronze, brass, and copper to darken the metal. On zinc and galvanized steel, it creates a weathered black patina. Black Magic Patina does not work on stainless steel or aluminum. It should not be diluted unless you are working on the Metal Coatings.

Midnight Black Patina
Midnight Black Patina reacts on aluminum, bronze, brass, copper, iron, steel (not stainless), and zinc/galvanized. This patina works quickly and has excellent durability. Rust is slower to develop compared to other black patinas which allows greater flexibility when applying a sealer. On aluminum (full strength), the first coat produces a fast grey/black finish. Additional coats create a solid black that does not rub off easily. On steel (full strength), one coat makes a blue/black oil slick finish. Extra coats darken the patina. On zinc/galvanized (full strength), the first application establishes a bronze/brown finish. Reapplication results in even more warm color with great adhesion. On bronze, brass, and copper (diluted 1:1 with distilled water), the first coat produces a beautiful brown patina. Second and third coats darken the patina to a rich antique black.

Size
Ferric Nitrate
Ferric Nitrate Patina creates a transparent brown patina when applied hot to bronze, brass, and copper. It does not need to be dilutued before use. The final color is determined by the strength of the solution, amount applied, surface preparation, and the temperature of the metal during application. Lighter applications will be transparent golden brown. Additional coats will turn dark burgundy to brown and more opaque. Ferric Nitrate Patina is commonly used over a Liver of Sulfur base to produce a chocolate brown patina. On iron, steel, and zinc, Ferric Nitrate Patina is applied cold and takes hours to develop. On iron and steel, this process generates a stable orange rust. On zinc, the result is a yellow brown finish.
Size
Ferric Nitrate/Ferric Chloride
Ferric Nitrate/Ferric Chloride Patina produces a transparent red brown finish when applied hot to bronze, brass, and copper. Similar to Ferric Nitrate Patina, the final color and opacity is determined by the application process. Additional coats will turn darker brown and more opaque. Ferric Nitrate/Ferric Chloride Patina does not need to be diluted before use.
