Crank vs. Adjustable Sculpting Stands: Which Is Right for You?
A head-to-head comparison of heavy-duty crank stands, folding display stands, and adjustable armature stands — with a quiz to match you to the right platform for your work.
The sculpting stand is the most overlooked investment in any studio. Sculptors will spend hundreds on clay, tools, and armatures — then set the whole assembly on a kitchen table, a stack of cinder blocks, or a wobbly old stand borrowed from a community studio. The right stand doesn't just support your work; it protects your back, saves your time, and improves your output quality by keeping the sculpture at the optimal working height through every phase of the project.
This guide compares the three main categories of sculpting stands we carry at Sculpture Depot, explains when each one shines, and includes an interactive quiz to match your needs to the right stand.

Deep Dive: Heavy Duty Crank Stand
The Heavy Duty Crank Stand is the professional sculptor's daily driver. Made entirely of steel in Loveland, Colorado, it's engineered for the demanding reality of clay sculpture: heavy loads applied off-center, forceful pushing and pressing, hundreds of rotations per session, and years of daily use.
Why the Crank Matters
The hand-crank height mechanism is the single feature that separates a professional sculpting stand from everything else. Here's why: during a typical figure sculpting session, you move between working on the feet, the torso, and the head — zones that span 18–24 inches of vertical space. On a fixed-height stand, you compensate for this by bending (for the feet) and reaching (for the head), stressing your back and shoulders for hours.
With a crank stand, you lower the platform when working on the head and raise it when working on the feet, keeping your body in neutral posture throughout the session. This adjustment takes 3 seconds — you do it unconsciously once the habit forms. Over a career, this one feature prevents more back injuries than any other piece of studio equipment.
The Locking Swivel
The 24" top features a two-point adjustment system: it can spin freely (for rotating the sculpture to work on different angles without walking around) or lock stable (for applying force during clay pressing and detail work where the sculpture must stay still). This dual-mode swivel eliminates the choice between rotation and stability — you get both, switched by a simple adjustment.
Made in Loveland
These stands are fabricated right here in Loveland, Colorado — the same town where Sculpture Depot operates. The steel construction, 4" lockable casters, and oversized crank mechanism are built to professional standards. They're heavy (that's a feature, not a bug — heavy means stable), but the casters make repositioning effortless even when loaded with a 50+ pound sculpture assembly.
Heavy Duty Crank Stands are back in stock but parts availability is limited. If you've been waiting for these, we recommend ordering promptly — when they sell out, lead times can be significant. Both square and round top configurations are available.
A sculptor who buys a crank stand never goes back to a fixed platform. It's one of those investments where you wonder how you ever worked without it — like power steering in a car.
Sculpture Depot — Studio NotesDeep Dive: Folding & Armature Stands
Italian Folding Display Stand
The Italian Folding Stand is a beautifully made chrome and black varnished steel stand with a 23" wide base and 12" diameter top. It adjusts from 25" to 40" and folds flat for storage or transport. Made in Italy with attention to fit and finish that matches its dual purpose as both a working stand and a display pedestal.
Best for: Seated sculpting (the 25" minimum height is perfect for desk or stool working height), smaller bust and head-scale work, classroom environments where stands need to be stored between sessions, and double duty as a display stand for finished pieces. The lower price point also makes it accessible for students and beginning sculptors building their first proper studio.
Adjustable Armature Stand
The Adjustable Armature Stand is a specialized tool designed to hold a figure armature rather than serve as a general-purpose sculpting platform. Available in 18" and 24" sizes, it features a vertical rod on a metal base with a horizontal rod that adjusts in both directions and rotates 360°. The end of the horizontal rod includes a slot for securing armature wire with a jam nut.
Best for: Direct armature mounting for figure sculpture, especially when paired with TruForm armatures and aluminum wire figures. It's designed to sit on top of a sturdy table or bench — it's not a floor-standing unit. This makes it the right choice when you already have a good table at the correct height and need precision armature positioning on top of it.
There's also the heavy-duty turntable head — engineered to support up to 75 lbs at 45°, accepting any 1" diameter shaft. Four universal slots for attaching forms and parts, with a single knob controlling movement through three planes (90° tilt, 360° turn, 360° rotation). For sculptors who already have a sturdy base and need just the rotation mechanism, this is a precision option.

The crank stand is substantial — all-steel construction designed for permanent studio placement. It ships UPS only (size exceeds US Mail standards). The weight is a feature: a heavy base means zero wobble when you're pressing clay at the top of a 24" figure. The 4" lockable casters make repositioning easy despite the weight.
The Italian stand handles approximately 50 lbs comfortably. A full 24" figure with armature and backiron can reach 30–50 lbs of total clay weight, which puts it at the Italian stand's practical limit. For larger or heavier figures, the crank stand's higher load capacity (100+ lbs) is the safer choice. The Italian stand excels with busts, heads, and smaller figures.
The Armature Stand is designed to sit on a table, not to stand on the floor. It gives you armature positioning and rotation but doesn't provide its own floor-to-working-height elevation. If you have a sturdy table at the right height, the Armature Stand is an excellent (and affordable) way to add rotation and armature mounting. But for a floor-standing workspace, you'll need a crank stand, Italian stand, or a separate sturdy table underneath.
Both are 24" and available for the Heavy Duty Crank Stand. Square tops provide more surface area for rectangular baseboards and give you a straight edge reference for alignment. Round tops make rotation smoother and have no corners to bump into as you walk around the sculpture. Most figure sculptors prefer square (for baseboard stability); most portrait and bust sculptors prefer round (for unobstructed rotation). Either works — it's a personal preference.
The Italian Folding Stand is the classroom standard for three reasons: it folds flat for storage between classes, it's priced accessibly for multi-unit purchases, and it's attractive enough to double as a display pedestal for student exhibitions. For tabletop classroom setups, the Adjustable Armature Stand paired with standard tables is the most budget-friendly option that still gives students rotation and armature mounting.
For the crank stand: nothing — the melamine top provides a clean, level surface. Your backiron baseboard sits directly on the platform. For the Italian stand: if your baseboard is larger than the 12" top, use a sheet of ¾" plywood as an adapter between the stand top and your baseboard to create a wider, stable platform. Clamp or screw the plywood to the stand's top plate.
